As a veteran senior photographer, I understand that budget considerations are a very real obstacle for many seniors. It’s why I strive to give seniors and their parents the maximum bang-for-your-buck, and make sure I am only delivering the very best products and services. One thing that many seniors worry about is affording a wardrobe for their senior photos. These days, even a few high-quality outfits can cost several hundred dollars, and they may be things seniors can only wear a few times. That’s why I wanted to share some cost-effective and more sustainable options.
Rent your wardrobe: Renting is a great way to wear beautiful, designer items for a fraction of the cost. Although you can’t keep them for long, it can allow you to wear much higher-end items for your senior session. Be sure to read the rental contracts carefully, and to store and care for the garments well, so that you don’t incur extra charges. It is also helpful if you know the size that you wear in the brands/designers that you choose, or to order multiple sizes. Companies like Rent the Runway and Nuuly make the process very simple and straightforward.
Thrift for expensive statement pieces: Got your eye on something specific? You can search the item number or brand on sites like Mercari or ThredUp and find similar or like-new pieces for less expensive. Thrifting is a great way to find a statement piece or a designer item that you may not be able to afford otherwise, and it helps keep clothes out of landfills. ThredUp often has sales on top of their inexpensive prices, and they carry higher-end brands like Anthropologie and Free People. You could also choose one or two designer items and fill in the outfit gaps with basics from H&M and Zara that are less expensive.
Borrow or swap clothes with friends: If you have friends that are similar clothing sizes, you may be able to borrow pieces from their wardrobe, such as heels or dresses. Again, by securing a few showstopping items, you can fill in the rest with less expensive pieces that aren’t as visible. Another thing to consider is using heirloom items from grandparents or family members, like jewelry, scarves, or letterman’s jackets. It can add interest to your session, as well as include memories from someone that you love. Some seniors have even been able to find community clothing swaps or free exchanges that allow you to bring clothes you don’t wear anymore, and exchange them for new-to-you items.
Utilize a capsule wardrobe: If you are planning your senior wardrobe a year or so in advance, you can choose to intentionally curate a capsule wardrobe ahead of time. This means that you curate specific, minimalistic items that can be mixed together and worn repeatedly in several different outfits. Examples of capsule wardrobe items would be: black jeans, dark jeans, neutral tees, a trench coat, a plain sneaker, etc. By doing this, you can not only save money for a statement piece or two, you can also help stop the cycle of fast fashion. Investing in a few durable, well-made items also ensures longevity, making this a sustainable and economical fashion strategy.
By reimagining existing clothing, exploring thrift stores, borrowing from loved ones, and creating capsule wardrobes, seniors can showcase their unique style in an eco-friendly and cost-effective manner. These thoughtful choices reduce waste and expenses, infusing photos with rich stories and cherished memories. As you plan your next photo session, consider these sustainable and budget-friendly options to make each picture a step to more conscious living!
