How to Include a Pet in your Senior or Family Photos

If you’ve scrolled my Instagram feed for any length of time, you probably have noticed that many families choose to include their pets in their sessions! It’s no surprise, since our four-legged friends are often beloved family members who deserve to be commemorated as well. However, when it comes to pets that you want to include in your shoot, you may be wondering how it works and how to make it a smooth and comfortable experience. Here are some tips to including your pet in your upcoming senior or family session:

Firstly, reach out to me! Knowing that you want to include your sweet pet in your session helps me design your custom session and make your experience specific to you and your needs. Please let me know at the time of booking if this is something you’re considering, and what kind of pet you have. Most commonly, people include their dogs but there is a big difference between a large dog and a lap dog, so knowing the breed and type can help me as I plan ahead! If you’d like to include a pet that is not a dog, please let me know so we can brainstorm together.

Plan for exercise and breaks: Before the shoot, be sure that your pet gets plenty of exercise and potty breaks to help them be more relaxed and to expend excess energy. Being along some of their favorite toys or treats to reward good behavior and provide plenty of time for them to become acclimated.

Safety first: My priority is always the safety of you, your pet, and your other family members. Please be mindful of how a pet may react or respond in an situation and use appropriate safety measures, like leashes or boundaries where appropriate. If there’s anything I need to know about your pet’s behavior, please be honest so we can make it as comfortable and easy as possible for every one involved.

Remember to consider outfits and things like mud/rain. The outdoors can be tricky, and especially when pets are concerned! Be mindful of what you are wearing and when you change, so that you don’t end up with dirty paw prints or dog hair on your outfit. I’m happy to help you think through a good schedule for you and your family if needed. If the weather is inclement, I am well-equipped to help pivot our time together and think of an alternate plan.

Be patient and flexible: Understand that working with pets can be unpredictable, and it may take time and patience to get the shot you want. Stay calm and flexible, and open-minded about your expectations. I have worked with lots of pets from horses to dogs, and I have just about seen it all! Sometimes pets cooperate and sometimes they don’t, so the more information I have, the better, and the more able I am to help assist you in including them in the session. Some seniors or families bring along a dedicated helper to help manage their pet when we are doing shots without the pet in them. This can be a helpful and practical idea.

No matter what you decide, I can help you bring your vision to life! Your pets can be a meaningful and exciting way to enhance your family or senior photos, and clients love the end results. Reach out today to get started!
