How to pull off a formal family shoot

I LOVE this incredible, glamorous family session. Pulling off a formal family shoot may seem like a big and stressful event, but actually, anyone can choose a session like this one. Even if you have small toddlers, a fancier, formal session is something everyone should do once in their lifetime. It makes for the perfect holiday session for that Christmas card, and it gives you a special chance to dress up and feel a little fancy! Here’s a few pointers:

  1. Give yourself lots of time to book and plan your shoot: A more formal session takes more work, and a bit more time to find outfits and design posing, locations and outfits. Please book it with enough time to give yourself plenty of options, so that it doesn’t become more stressful.
  2. Find a great alterations center or a tailor: One of the hallmarks of a perfect formal family shoot is clothing that is well-fitted. This sets it apart and makes it feel more elegant. Find a tailor that can hem pants to the perfect length, and take that dress up just a few inches to make it very flattering. Give yourself time to get alterations done, because they can take up to a few weeks.
  3. Look at renting the big items: If you are wondering how you can budget for a more formal session, consider renting some of the things like a suit or a very formal dress. This can save money on something that you won’t wear very often, and it can also come with alterations when you rent, which gets two things done at once. If you are purchasing brand new items for children, look into stores like Janie and Jack and JCrew for great, classic pieces that will last for years.
  4. Make it a memory: One thing that’s really fun for formal shoots is to make it a day of memories. Go big, and get pedicures or manicures, get your makeup done professionally, and enjoy a fancy dinner out (for those of you with older children, this is probably a bit easier). This will reinforce happy memories with your photoshoot, and create an unique day that your children will really remember.
  5. It can also be a couple’s session: If you are a couple and would prefer to do formal photos just the two of you, we can definitely make that happen! You don’t need to make it a family shoot to enjoy the fun of formalwear and a special location. Let me know when you book!

Lastly, remember that anyone can pull off a fancier shoot, simply by keeping an open mind, planning ahead, and making it a ton of fun! As a professional family photographer, I love bringing your hopes and dreams to life, and a formal shoot is one that SO many clients want, but aren’t sure how to make it happen. Please let me know if that’s you!
