Tips for Senior or Family Photos in the Summer

Every season has positive aspects to it, and many seniors and families choose fall and spring to document their milestone moments. Of course, these are popular for a reason: the colors are foliage are usually beautiful and exceptionally colorful during these seasons. However, there are many families who need to hire a professional during warmer months. Here are some of our best tips to capturing these memories when the temperatures creep up:

Consider the weather when planning makeup and hairstyling: Hot weather creates a few problem areas for photoshoots, and typically they include frizzy hair and makeup that sweats off. It’s important to think about this when you are preparing. We recommend using a professional hair and makeup stylist (please contact us for our recommended vendors), but sometimes that’s not always attainable for family or senior portraits. If you are not using professional vendors, definitely choose a frizz-friendly hairstyle such as: dutch braids, loose curls, or a blowout that’s been sprayed with product. Pay attention to wispy hairs across your forehead, which can be hard to edit out. We also recommend using makeup wipes to blot your face, and using a makeup setting spray to keep everything in place!

Choose temperature-friendly clothing: This seems fairly obvious, but I have seen some people choose heavy fabrics and extremely dark fabrics that didn’t make their session very comfortable or cool. I recommend airy styles like maxi dresses or rompers for my seniors or moms, in lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton. If you are a guy, consider linen pants or lightweight chino. Also, consider clothes that show any sweat marks, which can show up in brighter and polyester fabrics, and look for neutrals or prints like gingham which hide any underarm sweat.

Choose an appropriate time of day: I am always ready to help you select the proper time, but prepare you and your family/senior for an earlier morning time, before the sun gets too high. Alternately, evenings can be beautiful during the golden hour, and won’t have everyone squinting in the sunlight. I always work with the sunlight and location to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible. If you have little ones especially don’t forget to hydrate and apply sunscreen so that they can remain as happy as possible!

Don’t be afraid to get creative: I’ve had many families bring props like ice cream, bubbles, or even water toys to help their little ones during hot or humid sessions. I love hearing the ideas that families have thought up, and only ask that you mention it to be during the planning stage. I love to design your shoot around your wishes, and knowing what you have in mind can help me select the right location. For seniors, if you have something in mind for sports props, we can go over this when you book! I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up.

Lastly, remember that I am your best resource for your upcoming session. No matter when you book with me, I am happy to walk you through the best times or options for your family or your senior. Please reach out to us today to book!
