What I Want the Parents of Seniors to Know

As a veteran senior photographer, I have met hundreds of seniors and their parents/guardians. I feel so privileged to be the one capturing this milestone for so many amazing young people, and it’s a celebration of the transition between adolescence and adulthood! Over the years, I’ve learned a lot by observing the relationship between parents and their children, and have some tips for making the experience amazing for both of you. This is a pivotal stage of life for your high school senior, but it’s also a big moment for you parents, too! Let’s work together to make it unforgettable:

It’s about your senior: While it’s natural for every parent to want the perfect senior photos, it’s also important to remember that ultimately, it’s about your child. The photos are the opportunity for them to express themselves, their passions and their own personality. Encourage them to choose outfits and a photographer that they love and want to use, even if it’s not what you envisioned. If your senior is unsure or doesn’t care, help encourage them to look through portfolios and blogs to decide what resonates with them.

Trust the process: Senior photographers are experts! Not to toot my own horn, but I’ve crafted the senior experience to be seamless and smooth (and yes, even with trial and error over the years). We know how to bring out the very best in your kid, even if they’re reluctant about the process. We understand composition, lighting, and how to capture emotion. We love to hear your ideas and incorporate them, but please keep an open mind for our experience and expertise!

Please plan ahead: When you leave senior photos for the last minute, often our best dates and times are not available anymore. This isn’t because we are out to get you, we promise! Our prime bookings are taken quite early, so the earlier you can get on our books, the better. This also eliminates a lot of stress and pressure on both you and your senior, because the images that are booked earlier are done in time for graduation announcements and yearbooks, etc. Booking early also gives you both plenty of time to secure wardrobe and accessories and feel super confident.

Communicate openly: Of course, all of us want the best images ever, but remember that senior photos should also be fun. Avoid putting pressure on your senior to lose weight, to pose a certain way, or to “get the perfect shot”. All they need from you is an encouraging spirit and lots of love! Please also refrain from pressuring them to get a perfect photo because of the cost. We make our pricing crystal-clear so that you can budget accordingly and know about any fees ahead of time. We want a relaxed senior and a relaxed parent, and we want the experience to be a bonding experience (additionally, if you are a guardian or grandparent or have a unique family dynamic, please let me know).

Above all, enjoy the experience. Senior photos typically only happen once, and it should feel special and be a memory you treasure together! Be present, offer your support to your senior, and trust your photographer. Let me know if you have any questions!
