The Dos and Don’ts of Senior Year: A Guide for High School Seniors

Senior year is an exciting time, but it also can be incredibly stressful because of the many demands on your time. With the end of high school approaching for many students, you may be wondering how to make the most of this critical time. Here are some do’s and don’ts to consider:

DO prioritize your academic performance: Colleges do look at your senior year grades, including your last semester or term. It’s not okay to slack off once you’re admitted, because many schools still consider that last term to be as important as the first ones before you applied. Keep up your academics, and focus on your grades.

DO make time for your extracurricular and volunteer activities: Continue your participation in all the activities that interest you, as well as volunteer hours. These things not only help you learn to manage your time well, but also cultivate the things you are passionate about. Volunteering in things that help others not only benefits your community, but can also help your own mental health in a positive way.

DO maintain strong relationships with the mentors/teachers in your life: Maintain strong professional relationships, since networking is so important in the long-term. If these people have invested strongly in your life, prioritize spending time with them, and learn all the things that you can from their life experience. Many times, there are the people also providing references for you in the future at a job or college.

DON’T procrastinate on college applications: Even if you choose a trade school or other path after college (which is equally admirable), it’s important to explore all your options. Give yourself plenty of time to to research schools, pen essays, and visit the schools you may be interested in. This also applies to trade schools or gap years, where you will need to research programs before you make a final decision.

DON’T try to weather this alone: It’s so essential to have family and friends to support you, but especially during senior year. It can be a stressful time when you need extra support for your mental and physical health, and you need people you can rely on. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from mental health professionals as well as family and friends if you are struggling.

DON’T neglect your social life: Although it may seem like academics and grades are all that matters, relationships always matter more. Be mindful of the ways you spend your time, and the actions and words of your life, as these things will have a lasting impact. Always treat everyone with kindness and respect, and head into the next chapter of your life knowing that you always put people before achievements!
