There’s a part of senior year that I never get over, and that never gets old. Senior year feels like both an ending and a beginning, and that’s exactly what your photos should capture. It’s not just about a nice smile or a pretty background. It’s about showing who you are right now, right before everything changes. That’s why sometimes I call it the “chapter one portrait”…this is just the beginning!
I love when seniors bring their world into their session. Your guitar, your sports jersey, your favorite book, even your favorite sweatshirt. Those little things tell a story, and they matter more than you think. When you bring what you love, it shows up in your photos. You look more relaxed, more natural, and more you.
Parents, I know how much this milestone means. You’ve watched your child grow, and now they’re standing on the edge of their next adventure. I want your gallery to feel like the bridge between who they’ve been and who they’re becoming. The best photos always happen when everyone lets the moment unfold. A little laughter, a quiet pause, a proud smile in between shots. Those are the ones you’ll treasure most.
Choosing outfits and locations can be fun too. Think layers, colors that fit your personality, and places that mean something to you. Maybe it’s your favorite coffee shop, a trail you walk every day, or the spot where your team celebrated a big win. Bring at least two outfits so we can switch things up and capture a few different sides of your personality. Stay away from bright neon colors or bold patterns that might distract from your face. And if you’re not sure what to wear, I’m always happy to help you plan something that fits the season and the setting.
If you wear makeup, aim for a natural look that still feels like you. And no matter what, bring along a few touch-up items like powder, a brush, and water. Parents, a lint roller, extra bobby pins, and tissues are always good to have nearby. It’s amazing how those little details make everything run more smoothly (I usually stash these items in my photographer’s bag of tricks, too!).
When I think about senior sessions, I think about how quickly life moves. These photos aren’t just for now, they’re for later, when you’ll look back and remember exactly how this season felt. Not staged, not forced, just real. That’s what I love most about this work.
