Lighting is one of those buzzwords that gets tossed around quite a bit from clients and photographers alike, but if you ask, most aren’t even sure what the dynamics and techniques really are. However, there is one thing we can all agree on, and that is the impact that lighting has on portraits! When I started my photographer journey, I found out very quickly that natural light has such a soft, flattering effect, and I fell in love! It enhances skin tones and adds a touch of warmth and authenticity, and that was what I wanted to be known for.

Natural light enhances your natural beauty: One of the aspects I love most about natural light is how it creates gentle shadows and highlights that enhance my subjects’ natural beauty. Unlike artificial lighting, which can often be harsh and unflattering, natural light brings out the best in everyone. Whether I’m photographing a high school senior or a family, the soft glow of natural light always helps to create a more timeless look. It is also incredibly flattering for all heights and shapes, and adds natural shine to hair and skin, as well!
Beautiful lighting inspires creativity and versatility: Shooting outdoors also adds an element of versatility to my work. The different qualities of light throughout the day, from the golden hues of sunrise and sunset to the even, diffused light of an overcast day, allow me to capture a range of moods and settings. Each lighting condition offers something unique, and I love the challenge of adapting to the natural environment to create stunning portraits. The variety also makes sure that no two sessions look alike, and that every client has a session planned just for them. One of my favorite techniques is shooting during the golden hour, the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. The light during these times is soft, warm, and perfect for portraits. I also embrace cloudy days because the clouds act like a giant diffuser, spreading the light evenly and reducing harsh shadows. This versatility is one of the reasons I adore natural light photography.

Shooting outdoors in natural light is comfortable: I’ve also found that shooting outdoors in natural light helps my clients feel more relaxed and genuine. There’s something about being in a natural environment that puts people at ease, and this comfort translates into more authentic and candid expressions in the photographs. Whether we’re in a park, by the lake, or in a cozy backyard, the connection to nature always makes the photoshoot experience a little more personal. I also love shooting at locations that are meaningful to the clients, like their family farm or childhood home, and if you have something in mind, we can bring that dream to life!
While I primarily use natural light, I also enjoy the creative control that studio lighting offers for certain types of portraits. For holidays and special in-studio sessions, like Christmas minis, studio lighting allows me to craft the perfect environment and mood. Offering both natural and studio lighting techniques ensures I can deliver the most versatile portraits for every occasion and continuing to give my clients the best!
