The Most Overlooked Component of Senior Photos

When I meet with a prospective senior and their parent(s), I love chatting about all the aspects of senior photos. From locations to poses, they’re always super eager to talk about everything, and I am always eager to hear their ideas! As we plan together, the focus is always the senior themselves, and their personality being shown off in their images. But there is one thing that comes up repeatedly when seniors schedule and book their photos, and it’s one that might surprise you…it’s shoes.

Yes, I said shoes

Over and over, I see graduates plan their outfits down to the very last detail, but leave the shoes until the last second. They may scrounge around in their closet and find an old pair of shoes that isn’t quite right, and then make-do with them, instead of realizing your shoes really impact the overall look. That’s why I want to talk about footwear today, and how to use your choice to enhance your photos, not distract in them.

  1. See which shoes you already own: There are many staple type pairs of shoes, such as ankle boots, simple neutral flats, or plain white sneakers, that can look great in photos. We suggest puling every shoe that is fairly neutral in style (and that you feel comfortable in) out of your closet to see what’s available already. Then, focus on cleaning any scuffs or stains off them, as best you can. The dirt on a shoe can show up very easily in photos (with the exception of things like cowboy boots which are meant to look more worn), especially on white sneakers.
  2. Try on all your outfits WITH shoes: Many seniors leave out their shoes when trying on their outfits, which is a huge mistake. The hem lengths on many dresses or skirts, and even pants, can drastically change when shoes are added. We suggest trying on all your outfits with the shoes, proper undergarments, and looking in a full length mirror for the full effect. Don’t forget that light can change the appearance too, so shine a light behind you to make sure nothing is overly sheer.
  3. Go shopping for shoes that you love: If you choose a special location, be sure that you will be able to comfortably walk in the area you’ve chosen. A downtown, urban spot will be much easier to navigate in high heels than a location in the country with lots of bumps or hills. It really can show on your face if you’re struggling to walk in your shoes, or if they don’t fit properly, and you definitely do not want to be thinking about your footwear when your session is taking place. Keep in mind when you go shoe shopping: Look for appropriate, comfortable choices that you will also be able to wear after your shoot is done (pro tip: a neutral suede ankle boot will go with everything from jeans to dresses!). Choose quality fabrics like leather or suede if your budget allows.
  4. Ask for help: If you need help choosing the right footwear for your outfits and location, please let me know. I am a resource for my clients, and my years of experience have helped me understand and be able to put together the right look for photos. Please reach out and don’t hesitate if you are wondering what looks best. It’s better to ask ahead of time, then look back on your photos and wonder what would have looked better!
