Growing Up in Front of the Lens: Western NY Family Photography

I still remember the first time I photographed a family with little ones; those tiny hands wrapped around their parents’ fingers, wide eyes taking in the world. Now, years later, those same kids are getting ready for high school senior sessions. Watching that kind of growth, and having the honor of capturing it, is something I’ll never take for granted. It’s one of the most meaningful parts of what I do. And every time I meet with one of my legacy families, I’m reminded that being part of a family’s journey in this way is one of the best parts of my job.

When families come back year after year, there’s a rhythm and ease that naturally develops. The kids remember me. Mom and Dad know how I work. And together, we build something important: a visual legacy. That familiarity means more comfort during sessions, and it shines through in the images we create together. In fact, some articles show that family photos help boost the confidence and security of kids’ self-esteem!

One of the most helpful things you can do is keep a running timeline of your family’s photo milestones. Whether it’s a private folder on your phone or a big, printed gallery wall, having that visual record helps you see how far you’ve come and what’s already been done in terms of locations or outfits. I love helping families add to their story each year with a mix of portraits that feel both timeless and personal. As kids grow, their personalities really start to shape the session. That’s why I always encourage parents to include their children in the planning process, especially as they get older. Letting your wary teen help pick the location or suggest a favorite outfit can turn a photo shoot into something they look forward to. It becomes a chance for them to express who they are right now, in this stage of life.

Another tip? Think about building little traditions around your photo sessions. I know families who go out for ice cream afterward every single year. Others bring the same cozy blanket to wrap up in at the end of each shoot. These small touches add a sense of continuity and make the experience something your kids will remember fondly. When you stick with one photographer, you’re not just booking annual photos, you’re investing in someone who knows your family, your style, and what makes your crew tick. That trust leads to the kind of photos that go beyond smiling at the camera. They feel like you.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos, or if it’s been a few years since your last session, I’d love to help you add to your family’s story. It’s never too late to start building that beautiful legacy. (Images of the beautiful Moorman Family’s extended family session!)
