One of my favorite things about family sessions is when I get to focus on siblings. There is just something about that connection that pulls at my heartstrings. Whether they are holding hands, leaning on each other, or bursting into giggles mid-photo, those moments feel extra special. As a mom (of a graduating senior!) myself, I know how fleeting those stages of childhood can be. One minute they’re bickering in the backseat and the next they’re curled up reading a book together. It’s all part of the story, and I love having the chance to freeze those sweet slices of time.

One thing I’ve found helpful when photographing siblings is creating space for them to interact in ways that feel natural to them. Instead of placing too much focus on posing, I’ll guide them gently and then give them time to just be together. Sometimes that means chatting quietly, other times it turns into shared laughter or a spontaneous hug. When they settle into that comfort with each other, that is when the most meaningful images begin to appear.
I often find that the most meaningful images come when we stop trying too hard. Once the kids forget about the camera and just focus on each other, everything softens. I have had sessions where a quiet hug between older brothers says more than any pose ever could. And then there are times when siblings just can’t stop laughing, and we roll with it. That joy, that comfort, that shared history—those are the things that make these photos so treasured years down the road.

If your children have a big age gap or very different personalities, that is completely okay. I have worked with siblings who are shy, some who are loud and silly, and others who need a little more time to warm up. Each session is shaped by the kids in front of my camera. I always try to meet them where they are, never rushing, and always making room for their natural dynamic to shine. I want them to feel seen, loved, and safe to be themselves. That is when the best photographs happen.
Outfits can help bring a session together, but they don’t need to be fancy. I always suggest sticking with soft, comfortable clothing in colors that go well together but don’t match exactly. Light earth tones, gentle blues, warm creams, and soft greens work beautifully in the fields and parks around Western New York. We can always talk through outfit ideas beforehand too. I love helping families choose pieces that feel like them and photograph beautifully.
If your heart is tugging at the idea of capturing your kiddos just as they are right now, I would love to help you do that. Let’s plan a session that celebrates their bond, their laughter, and the sweet connection only siblings share. Reach out anytime. I’m here to answer questions, help with outfits, or simply chat about your vision. I cannot wait to create something beautiful with you.
