What I Want Every Senior (and Their Parents) to Know Before Graduation

Every spring, I start thinking about the seniors I’ve photographed over the years. How quickly the time between booking their session and tossing their cap flies by. As a mom myself, I know the mix of emotions that comes with senior year. It’s equal parts celebration and heart squeeze. When I’m behind the camera, I see the little flashes of who they’ve always been. The grin they gave their mom at five years old. The confident look that only came with high school. The quiet strength in their posture. It’s never just about photos. It’s about holding onto a moment that is already slipping into the next chapter.

If you’re preparing for a senior session, here are a few things that make the experience smoother and more meaningful:

Bring one outfit that just feels like “you.” Whether it’s your favorite jeans and sneakers or the hoodie you live in, you’ll feel more comfortable and confident when you’re wearing something you love. Yes, we can do dressy photos too, but I always recommend at least one look that’s totally relaxed.

Don’t overthink the location. Some of the best sessions happen in the simplest spots. A field near your house, your high school stadium, even your own backyard. What matters most is the connection, not the backdrop.

Make room for moments, not just poses. I guide my seniors every step of the way, but I also leave space for real laughs, quiet in-between moments, and whatever personality shows up. That’s what makes the gallery feel real and full of heart.

I want every senior to know this is your time, but you don’t have to perform. You don’t need to show up as anyone other than who you are. You don’t need a thousand outfit changes or a perfect smile in every frame. You’re already enough, exactly as you are right now. That’s what I want to capture.

And for the parents reading this, I see you too. I know what it feels like to look through the lens and suddenly see your baby turning into an adult. I always take a few moments in every session just for you, whether that’s quietly snapping a photo of the two of you together or letting you stand just behind me while you take it all in. These sessions are as much for you as they are for them. Senior year goes fast. But you’ll carry these photos forever. Not just in frames on the wall, but in the way they remind you of this season of becoming. That’s what I love most about this job. I get to hand you something lasting.

If your senior year is coming up soon, and you’re ready to capture this moment with heart and honesty, I’d love to walk through it with you. Reach out anytime. I’d be honored to be part of your journey.
