Each year, as the holidays roll around, I hear many people ask how they can better capture the season with their loved ones. I wanted to put together some tips for you as you navigate capturing all those special memories, and doing it with grace and efficiency! Here are my best tips for taking stellar holiday photos, and being everyone’s photo hero!

- Take photos early in the event: Many people wait until the end of the evening to snap the photos they want, but it’s actually a good idea to snap one when everyone arrives. You won’t miss anyone who has to leave early, or have people changing out of their cute party clothes because of a spill. Gather everyone together to get a great photo right at the start of an event like Christmas dinner, so that everyone is happier, not tired, and all the little ones are cheerier, too.
- Practice using your phone’s settings: If you are using a smartphone or camera, practice it before the holiday or the event that you are going to be shooting. Knowing the lighting, settings, and even things like a timer can make your day go much more smoothly. You can practice with willing family members if they’ll let you, but you can even try taking photos of the tablescape or decor to get the hang of the lighting and settings.
- Don’t be afraid to take the candid photos: Even though people may act annoyed with photos, ultimately, everyone is always happy to have photos afterwards! Of course, be considerate if someone doesn’t want their photo taken, but the unposed portraits are often the best ones. If you are hosting an event or meal, ask someone else to snap some candids while you are cooking or cleaning, so that you don’t miss out on the memories.
- Hire a professional for the biggest moments: If you are having a family reunion or celebrating a special anniversary or moment, sometimes hiring a professional is the best thing to do. It can take the stress out of a big moment, and release you to enjoy it and soak it in! Please let me know if you’re interested in hiring me to do a family session, OR if you’re interested in gifting it to someone else this season and you’ll TRULY be a hero!
